As Major League Baseball’s offseason approaches, the Baltimore Orioles are making key decisions on player contract options. The team has already opted to decline a mutual option for pitcher Zach Eflin but remains in negotiations regarding several other players as the November 2 deadline looms.
On Thursday, the Orioles announced they would not exercise their portion of Eflin’s $25 million mutual option for 2027. Eflin had a challenging 2026 season, making just one start before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Despite his limited appearances, he stayed involved with the team throughout the season.
Also on Thursday, it was reported that the Orioles were expected to decline the $20 million club option on outfielder Luis Robert Jr. Robert, acquired from the New York Mets to help bolster the outfield, played only three games before an injury cut his season short. While the Orioles might consider retaining him at a lower salary, any potential return hinges on salary negotiations.
In a more positive update, the Orioles and outfielder Rece Hinds have agreed to a one-year major league contract for the 2027 season. Hinds’ deal will be slightly above the league minimum, and though he struggled in his brief call-up at the end of the previous season, his minor league statistics have shown promise.
Among other players with options under consideration, first baseman Ryan Mountcastle’s future remains uncertain, and the team is likely to extend a qualifying offer to free agent Trevor Rogers. Teams must finalize their option decisions and qualifying offers by November 2, marking a critical point in the offseason.
In addition to player contracts, the Orioles’ new general manager, Jared Banner, is reportedly prioritizing collaboration with former player Cal Ripken Jr. as he navigates team decisions moving forward.
Looking ahead, the Orioles face important choices about their roster, especially considering the projected absence of Eflin in the early parts of the season as he recovers from surgery. The upcoming decisions will shape the team’s strategy as they aim to strengthen their lineup for the next season.
