Albert Pujols, 46, a prolific hitter who ranks fourth on Major League Baseball’s all-time home run list, is scheduled to interview for the managerial position with the Houston Astros. The Associated Press reported this development on November 5.
Pujols, a native of the Dominican Republic, concluded his MLB career in 2022, finishing with a .296 batting average, 703 home runs, and 2,218 RBIs. His home run record places him behind only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), and Babe Ruth (714), while his RBI total is second only to Aaron’s mark of 2,297.
During his illustrious career, Pujols earned three National League Most Valuable Player awards and won two World Series championships while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was selected as an All-Star 11 times and is a strong candidate for induction into the Hall of Fame.
Pujols will face stiff competition for the Astros’ managerial position, notably from Brad Ausmus, a former catcher for the team and manager of the Los Angeles Angels. Ausmus has served as the bench coach for the New York Yankees this season.
Last year, Pujols sought managerial roles with the Angels and San Diego Padres but was not selected. Instead, he went on to manage the Dominican Republic national team at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, successfully guiding the team to the semifinals, where they eliminated South Korea with a decisive 10-0 victory.
The interview process for the Astros is expected to be competitive, with additional candidates likely to emerge as the team seeks to fill the managerial role.
