Ames, Iowa — The Iowa State University Women’s Club has dedicated several months to sewing bags and underwear aimed at supporting girls in Africa, inspired by a local news segment detailing the challenges faced by these students.
The initiative began in February, following the airing of KCCI’s “This is Iowa” special, which shed light on the difficult conditions African girls encounter on their journey to education. The segment motivated club members to contribute through sewing.
As volunteers learned to create purses and underwear, interest and participation in the project quickly gained momentum. The Women’s Club has transformed its sewing activities into a collective effort to provide help to those in need.
In January, KCCI’s Eric Hanson, accompanied by chief photographer Robbie Rissman, traveled to South Africa to showcase the generosity of Iowans, emphasizing the community’s support for such meaningful initiatives.
The project continues to progress as the Women’s Club remains committed to its mission of making a positive impact on the lives of young girls pursuing education in Africa.
