Honda has unveiled a significant refresh of its flagship adventure motorcycle, the CRF1150L Africa Twin, marking the first major update in a decade. Originally introduced four decades ago as the XRV650 Africa Twin, this new generation promises enhancements in performance, design, and technology.
The redesign features a new steel frame paired with an aluminum swingarm, resulting in a lighter build and improved handling with a lower center of gravity. A newly integrated fuel sub-tank aims to extend the bike’s range, catering to long-distance riders.
Powering the updated Africa Twin is an enlarged 1,131cc twin-cylinder engine, a step up from the previous 1,084cc. This increase boosts output to 117 horsepower and 119 Nm of torque, reflecting gains of 16 horsepower and 7 Nm of torque. The engine also boasts a redesigned intake system, larger throttle bodies, a revised valvetrain, and a higher compression ratio to enhance performance further.
Honda offers two transmission options for the CRF1150L: a traditional six-speed manual and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Additionally, riders can choose from six riding modes tailored for various conditions, including Sport, Touring, Urban, Rain, Offroad, and Offroad+.
The suspension system is designed for off-road capability, featuring 49 mm upside-down front forks and a Pro-Link rear monoshock, with wheels sized at 21 inches in the front and 18 inches in the rear. Honda has also refined rider ergonomics, introducing narrower handlebars positioned higher and farther forward, along with revised footpeg placements.
The motorcycle’s displays have been modernized, including a 5.7-inch screen along with a new seven-inch TFT display. Riders will also benefit from wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enhancing the riding experience with smart technology.
While Honda has not specified the exact release date for the updated Africa Twin, the company confirmed that it will feature two new color options: Pearl Glare White and Mat Sandstorm Beige. Pricing details are expected to be announced in the future. The Africa Twin has established a strong presence within the adventure motorcycle market, with over 120,000 units sold in the past decade.
