Trump Administration Collaborates with Venezuelan Official Facing Serious Allegations

The Trump administration has reportedly established a working relationship with Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela’s interior and justice minister, who is currently under investigation for his alleged involvement in a political assassination in Chile. The collaboration reportedly began following the administration’s controversial operation in January 2025, which led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on drug trafficking charges.

Cabello remains a prominent figure within the Venezuelan government, despite facing U.S. drug trafficking charges and a $25 million bounty on his head. The partnership with Washington appears to be based on mutual interests, as former officials suggest that Cabello’s cooperation is essential for U.S. objectives in Venezuela, particularly regarding its oil industry.

Meanwhile, authorities in Chile are investigating Cabello’s possible role in orchestrating the killing of Lt. Ronald Ojeda, a former Venezuelan military officer who sought asylum in Chile. Prosecutors allege that Gámez, a leader of the Tren de Aragua gang, kidnapped Ojeda at Cabello’s behest. Investigators believe that Ojeda was killed while in custody of the gang.

Although the Trump administration’s alliance with Cabello has drawn criticism, particularly in the wake of the devastating June earthquakes that resulted in significant casualties, U.S. officials have downplayed allegations of his interference in disaster response efforts.

In discussions between U.S. officials and Cabello, critical issues including Venezuela’s mining sector and aid for earthquake victims have been addressed. However, critics argue that keeping Cabello in a position of power raises ethical concerns about the U.S.’s commitment to promoting the rule of law in the region.

As the investigation into Ojeda’s death proceeds, Cabello and other top officials have been implicated by witnesses and claims made during interrogations. Despite the lack of direct evidence linking Cabello to the crime, the implications of a formal inquiry are significant. Chile has already engaged with the International Criminal Court to address potential human rights violations connected to the Venezuelan government.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the complex dynamics of U.S.-Venezuelan relations, particularly as the administration navigates its goals in Latin America. Ongoing investigations into political violence and organized crime in the region further complicate diplomatic efforts and raise questions regarding the ethical dimensions of alliances formed amid allegations of serious human rights abuses.
