The eclipse will occur around sunset, casting a shadow across the Iberian Peninsula, parts of Greenland, and Iceland. The path of totality will begin near the North Pole and move southward, with totality lasting up to two minutes and 18 seconds in certain areas. The phenomenon will conclude over the Mediterranean after traversing a path of approximately 5,130 miles (8,260 kilometers), with maximum totality expected off the west coast of Iceland.
Observers within the path of totality will experience significant darkening of the sky, while millions more will witness a partial eclipse across a broader region, including parts of the northern United States, Canada, and much of Europe. The estimated coverage in various cities indicates that Dublin will see a 94% eclipse, while Oslo, Norway, will experience about 83% coverage. New York City will have approximately 9% coverage.

Adding to the day’s spectacular offerings is a rare planetary alignment of six planets visible before dawn, combined with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower expected that evening. The potential visibility of streaking meteors during the eclipse may enhance the overall experience for viewers.
Several organizations, including the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA, are planning various activities to celebrate the eclipse. ESA will host a live broadcast from Spain and a public event in León. NASA and other organizations will also provide coverage, seeking to capture scientific data and enhance public engagement.
U.S. research teams are preparing to launch over 60 high-altitude balloons from Spain and Iceland to monitor changes in the atmosphere during the short period of totality. Observers on high-altitude flights aim to document the eclipse through multiple cameras, potentially gathering thousands of images.
This eclipse is a precursor to an even longer total solar eclipse scheduled for August 2, 2027, which will feature nearly six and a half minutes of totality across southern Spain and beyond to North Africa and the Middle East.
