New Tennessee Congressional Map Tested in State Primary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A newly redistricted congressional map in Tennessee is being tested in a primary election on Thursday. This election will decide nominees for Republicans aiming to secure all the U.S. House seats in the state during the midterm elections. The map significantly alters the boundaries, notably dividing a majority Black district in Memphis.

The redistricting, enacted by the Republican-controlled Legislature, comes in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that lessens federal protections for minority voting rights. The changes have been welcomed by some Republican leaders, including former President Donald Trump, who views this as part of a broader strategy to maintain Republican influence in Congress.

Brent Taylor, a state senator, has received Trump’s endorsement in the Republican primary for the newly configured 9th Congressional District. This district now extends roughly 200 miles eastward from Memphis towards the Nashville area. While the previous version leaned toward Democrats, the reshaped district appears to favor Republicans, raising concerns among some Memphis voters about their political representation.

Following the redistricting, long-serving Democratic Representative Steve Cohen announced he would not seek reelection in the 9th District. Cohen’s departure opened the door for a primary race involving Democratic state Representatives Justin Pearson and London Lamar, resulting in a competitive four-person contest.

Voter Concerns Over Representation

Historically, Memphis has served as the center of its own congressional district. However, current changes have split the city and surrounding Shelby County into three separate districts. Voters have expressed concern over having their voices effectively diminished.

Lonzo Taylor, a retired postal worker, criticized the changes, emphasizing that the adjustments render the sole majority minority district in the state unfair. Other voters, like Milla Meiman, noted a significant adjustment in their representation, describing the changes as disorienting and likening them to voter suppression tactics. Terrice Thomas, an educator, echoed these sentiments, worried that new district lines could compromise local community representation.

The implications of this redistricting are being felt in other parts of the state, as seen in the 5th Congressional District, currently held by Republican Andy Ogles, who faces a primary challenge from Charlie Hatcher, a former agriculture commissioner endorsed by Governor Bill Lee. The boundaries of this district have also shifted significantly, now encompassing regions as far north as Kentucky and Missouri, extending south to Memphis.

In the 6th District, an open Republican seat has generated intense interest following Congressman John Rose’s decision to run for governor instead of seeking reelection. The competitive primary features various candidates, including state legislators and previous congressional representatives.

Additionally, voters are making selections for governor and the U.S. Senate, with significant primaries involving Republicans and Democrats alike, following a longstanding Republican hold on the governor’s office since 2011.

Why It Matters

The outcomes of these primaries may reshape Tennessee’s political landscape, particularly for minority voters whose representation has been affected by the new congressional map. Ensuring fair representation and maintaining active engagement in local governance are critical as voters adapt to these changes.
