EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers conducted their most intense training camp practice on Thursday at The Bolt, the team’s facility, following two days in San Diego. This marked the eighth practice of the camp, where the team returned to padded drills after a lighter session the previous day.
The practice featured one-on-one drills between offensive and defensive linemen, alongside an 11-on-11 period marked by a “thud” tempo that allowed for more vigorous contact. The third-string players even engaged in a fully live series, allowing defenders to tackle ball carriers to the ground.
Defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary emphasized the importance of maintaining the defensive edge during practice, stating, “You feel that physicality. There’s an edge to our defense that we need to keep stoking.” Both the offensive and defensive units showcased notable moments during the team drills.
Edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu participated in his first padded 11-on-11 session of camp amidst ongoing contract-extension negotiations. He set the tone by disrupting a run play during drills. On the other side, quarterback Trey Lance directed the second-team offense, though defensive players like Bud Dupree and Del’Shawn Phillips also made significant stops.
Highlights from 1-on-1s
During pass-rushing one-on-ones, standout performances were observed. Justin Eboigbe, interior defensive lineman, exhibited a remarkable ability to overcome blockers, winning both of his reps decisively. He demonstrated quick hands to defeat Branson Taylor and overpowered rookie guard Alex Harkey.
Other highlights from the one-on-ones included a strong showing from center Tyler Biadasz against rookie Nick Barrett, while Jamaree Caldwell and Branson Taylor had competitive matchups in their respective drills. Notably, Branson Taylor also worked at left guard and right tackle, indicating versatility as he vies for a starting position.
Defensively, the unit had multiple strong showings, with Jamaree Caldwell standing out against guard Trevor Penning. Furthermore, Khalil Mack and Akheem Mesidor were both noted for their impactful plays during drills.
In injury updates, defensive lineman Teair Tart and tackle Laekin Vakalahi did not participate in practice. Additionally, rookie safety Genesis Smith recorded his first interception of camp, catching a pass intended for tight end Charlie Kolar.
Throughout practice, quarterback Justin Herbert maintained a connection with receiver Ladd McConkey, completing multiple passes for significant gains, including a notable throw down the right sideline on the practice’s opening play. However, the offense faced challenges, fumbling four times during team drills with several botched snaps.
Why It Matters
The intensity of Thursday’s practice reflects the Chargers’ preparation for the upcoming season, emphasizing a strong defensive presence and an evolving offensive strategy. As players compete for positions and contracts, the performances observed could significantly influence team dynamics and depth. The effective collaboration between veterans and new players indicates the potential for growth as the team moves closer to the season.
