A new Dominican restaurant, El Patio Café & Lounge, has recently opened in downtown Waukegan, Illinois. The eatery, which officially opened on July 10, is situated within a historic restaurant building on Genesee Street and stands out as the only Dominican restaurant between Chicago and Milwaukee.
Elinelsy Castillo, the owner of El Patio, has introduced an innovative drink-mixing feature: a bicycle attached to a blender. Castillo explained that instead of turning on a switch, customers must pedal the bike to blend smoothies and other beverages. “I saw it online,” she stated about the unique setup.
Local Community Embraces New Culinary Addition
The restaurant’s opening coincides with the annual Scoop Waukegan event, attracting large crowds to the city. Castillo noted that her team observed the influx of visitors and decided to move some tables outside to enhance the dining experience. “We told people they could experience something new, Dominican food, and we were opening for the first time,” she remarked.
For over 50 years, a prominent blue sign labeling the space as a restaurant has been a fixture in downtown Waukegan. The building previously hosted a diner, transitioned to a Chinese restaurant, and had been vacant for seven years prior to El Patio’s arrival. Developer Mikki Schuck purchased the building in late 2024, planning extensive renovations, which included the transformation of the top two floors into luxury apartments, making them available in May 2025.
With a diverse menu, El Patio Café offers several traditional Dominican dishes, such as empanadas, yaroa, mangu, chimi, and a variety of breakfast options, including American fare. Castillo indicated that she initially aimed to open a coffee shop but decided to pursue the larger opportunity given the lack of Dominican cuisine in the area. “There are a lot of Dominicans here in Waukegan,” she said, explaining her decision to open El Patio.
The café operates daily, with hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays. In addition to its food offerings, the restaurant features a selection of coffee, matcha teas, and various flavoring options. Special events are also planned, featuring local businesses in collaboration with El Patio.
Why It Matters
The establishment of El Patio Café & Lounge not only enriches the culinary landscape of Waukegan but also contributes to the revitalization of downtown, bringing back a historical restaurant space while serving a community with deep cultural ties to Dominican cuisine.
