All ten climbers involved in a recent avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan have been confirmed deceased, according to a statement from Elite Exped, the expedition company led by renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja. The tragic event occurred on Thursday, prompting a search effort that faced significant challenges due to severe weather conditions.

Search and Recovery Efforts Underway

On Friday, rescue teams located four bodies, recovering three despite harsh environmental conditions. Military helicopters supported the operation, which resumed on Saturday to locate the remaining climbers.

Nirmal Purja, a former British Army soldier, is widely celebrated in the climbing community for his record-breaking ascent of the world’s 14 highest peaks in just 189 days in 2019. Purja’s accomplishment was the subject of a Netflix documentary, “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” His expedition was noted to be particularly significant, as it marked the first attempt for American climber Mallory Geis at an 8,000-meter peak, and was expected to be the final venture for guide Sakhi, a seasoned climber and high-altitude photographer.

Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, expressed deep condolences on behalf of the mountaineering community. As of Saturday, local authorities reported that the remains of Omani climber Nathira Ahmed were being transported to Islamabad while the bodies of Geis and Nepali climber Bahadur Gurung were held at a hospital in Skardu, a key city in Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.
