Authorities at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany discovered a drone equipped with explosives on Wednesday, prompting immediate safety measures and an investigation. The incident has been described by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt as indicative of a “new quality of danger.”
Drone Discovery Leads to Airport Disruptions
The drone was found near the airport’s south runway shortly after midnight on Tuesday, leading to the closure of both runways and the diversion of several flights, including a passenger aircraft. The drone was initially spotted as flight operations were being interrupted.
An airport employee reported the device, which authorities later identified as having an unknown explosive component. Officials deployed an anti-explosive robot to examine the drone, during which they successfully removed the detonator from the object.
Interior Minister Dobrindt, who interrupted his vacation to assess the situation, noted that the presence of an explosive-laden drone at an airport represents a significant escalation in threat levels. He stated that drone threats are not new, but this incident exemplifies a hybrid attack scenario.
Moreover, regional police and prosecutors revealed that a second aerial object collided with a freight aircraft after the latter attempted to land but had to divert when the runway closures were enacted. The affected plane was redirected to Hannover, approximately 200 kilometers away, where it sustained minor damage.
As investigations continue, Dobrindt emphasized that the origins of the drone, the type of explosives involved, and potential perpetrators are all critical areas of inquiry. Saxony’s regional interior minister, Armin Schuster, confirmed that authorities are also searching for parts of the suspected second drone.
Following the incident, the north runway resumed operations after about two hours, while maintenance on the south runway continued throughout the day. Authorities assured that there was no immediate risk to passengers or airport personnel. No disruptions to flight schedules occurred during daytime operations.
