At least 70 individuals have lost their lives and another 30 sustained injuries in an attack attributed to armed gangs in Haiti’s Artibonite region. This figure, reported by the human rights group Defenseurs Plus, markedly exceeds several official estimates, which have placed the death toll at approximately 16.
Details of the Attack
Reports indicate that the assault began in the early hours of Sunday in rural areas near Petite-Riviere, particularly around the community of Jean-Denis. Eyewitnesses noted that gang members attacked the region, terrorizing residents and setting homes ablaze.
Defenseurs Plus mentioned that up to 6,000 people might have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the violence. The United Nations reported more than 2,000 individuals had fled from their residences in the days preceding the attack, in response to earlier gang raids in the vicinity.
Initial accounts from police indicated 16 fatalities and 10 injuries. However, a subsequent report from civil protection authorities revised these numbers to 17 dead and 19 wounded, primarily among men. The UN spokesperson stated that their office in Haiti, known as BINUH, is actively monitoring the situation, noting conflicting estimates of casualties between 10 and 80.
In a joint statement with the Collective to Save the Artibonite, Defenseurs Plus condemned the lack of security measures, criticizing the authorities for leaving the area vulnerable to gang violence. They referred to the situation as a complete failure of governmental responsibility.
In an audio message purportedly from gang leader Luckson Elan, there were suggestions that the assault was a reaction to prior attacks on their stronghold by a rival faction. Meanwhile, the Artibonite region has experienced a surge in violent incidents linked to the ongoing conflict, which has expanded beyond the capital city of Port-au-Prince despite promises of increased policing and international support.
Haiti’s National Police have reported deploying three armored vehicles to the site, though their progress was hindered by barriers set up by the gangs. Officials stated the armed group had fled before police arrived, leaving a significant number of homes destroyed.
In the aftermath of the violence, injured victims have been transported to local hospitals, while deceased individuals have been taken to morgues. Authorities have initiated operations to capture the fleeing gang members.
More than 1.4 million people in Haiti are displaced due to conflict with armed groups, which has exacerbated the nation’s economic crisis and access to essential resources, including food. Since 2021, approximately 20,000 lives have been lost in Haiti due to gang-related violence, underlining an escalation in attacks and instability in the country.
Why It Matters
This incident highlights the escalating violence in Haiti, where armed gangs are increasingly operational. The rising death toll and displacement of civilians illustrate the urgent need for effective security responses and humanitarian assistance in a country facing long-standing socio-political challenges.
