Democratic gubernatorial candidate and current Attorney General Aaron Ford recently shared insights into his personal journey, emphasizing the experiences that shaped his political aspirations. Ford spoke at a union food pantry, reflecting on the community programs that played a pivotal role in his upbringing.
In an interview last month, Ford discussed the significance of his name, explaining that he prefers the pronunciation “A-Rin,” which is commonly heard in his hometown of Dallas, Texas. He noted, “That’s what my mama calls me,” reflecting on the importance of family in his life.
Ford described his childhood in Dallas, recalling lessons from his mother, such as filling an empty milk jug with water to create a safety net during times without running water. He shared a poignant memory about receiving a box of stale candy bars for dinner, a moment that led to him keeping a Skor candy wrapper in his office and home as a reminder of past hardships. “When times get tough, I have a visual reminder of what real tough times are,” he said.
The challenges of Ford’s early years included his parents’ divorce when he was around ten. He took on the responsibility of caring for his two younger brothers while managing his education. “My mom told me I had two jobs: keep my head in the books, and take care of my little brothers,” he recalled.
Ford’s father and stepfather influenced his work ethic and sense of responsibility. He said, “My biological father showed me what hard work looked like, and my stepfather showed me what accepting responsibility looked like.”
After enrolling at Texas A&M University, Ford faced unexpected life changes. He became a single parent shortly after the birth of his son. Despite these challenges, he continued to pursue his goals with support from his mother and public assistance programs like SNAP. Ford quipped about his past with Medicaid, emphasizing the journey from needing help to having a son who became a medical doctor after attending Georgetown Medical School.
Throughout his educational journey, which resulted in five degrees including a law degree and PhD, Ford worked multiple jobs to support his family. He originally intended to focus on education law but transitioned into politics, eventually becoming the state’s attorney general.
Reflecting on his political career, Ford acknowledged the importance of resilience, citing a lyric from Kendrick Lamar about maintaining focus despite criticism. He expressed his love for karaoke and shared how his faith, along with the support of his wife, has anchored him throughout his life.
As he campaigns for governor, Ford’s personal stories continue to resonate, showcasing his commitment to public service and the values instilled in him during his upbringing.
