CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Railin Perez, a pitcher for the Corpus Christi Hooks, is determined to turn his childhood dreams of playing Major League Baseball into a reality. Growing up in Santiago, Dominican Republic, Perez’s passion for the sport began at a young age, as he played baseball in the streets with friends and family.
“We used to play like in the street since we were kids, like two, three, four years old,” Perez reflected about his early experiences. In the Dominican Republic, baseball is a fundamental aspect of the culture, and for Perez, it represents national pride. “It’s way big. It’s like the most important sport back in DR… It’s the national sport,” he emphasized.
Path to Professional Baseball
The Dominican Republic has produced numerous athletes who have made significant contributions to Major League Baseball, a fact that Perez takes great pride in. He noted, “We are like one of the biggest places that has most players in the Major League. We have a lot of talent back in DR.”
Perez also attributes part of this talent to the rich cultural heritage, which includes traditional foods. He mentioned a local dish, mangú and los tres golpes, suggesting that the flavorful cuisine may play a role in the athleticism seen in Dominican players. “Yes, it helps us throw harder,” he joked.
But Perez maintains a serious focus on his aspirations. “My dream? To make it to the big league, spend like 10-15 years in the big league and become a Hall of Famer,” he stated. His journey towards this goal began when he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 2018, which he described as an invaluable experience.
Now in Corpus Christi, he feels positive about his performance this season, expressing, “I feel this is one of my best years here. That’s why we came to the U.S. to work on our abilities.”
Faith also plays a crucial role in Perez’s life. Wearing a “Jesus Won” shirt during an interview, he highlighted that his beliefs inspire him to pursue his dreams. “I thank God for the opportunity to be here,” he said.
Following the Hooks’ season, Perez will return to the Dominican Republic to participate in winter ball, stating that baseball is a year-round commitment for him. “It never stops,” he affirmed.
Despite his journey, Perez emphasizes that he remains connected to his roots, never forgetting where he came from.
Railin Perez’s story exemplifies the journey of aspiring athletes from the Dominican Republic striving for success in Major League Baseball. His dedication to the sport and commitment to his cultural heritage highlight the intersection of sports, identity, and ambition, illustrating the broader impact of baseball in communities around the world.
