The Coast Guard repatriated 51 migrants to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, following the interception of a makeshift vessel in the Mona Passage off the coast of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, on Saturday. This operation was part of ongoing efforts by the Homeland Security Task Force in the San Juan region to combat human smuggling and deter illegal maritime migration.
Details of the Interdiction
The incident began when aircrew from Customs and Border Protection detected a heavily overloaded vessel in the Mona Passage. In response, the Coast Guard Sector San Juan activated assets to intercept the vessel. The Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Doyle was dispatched to the scene, accompanied by a MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Borinquen for search and rescue support.
Upon interception, the crew of the Cutter Joseph Doyle boarded the vessel and found 51 migrants on board: 34 from the Dominican Republic, which included 30 men, two women, and two minors, as well as 17 from Haiti, consisting of 15 men and two women. The adult migrants were turned over to Dominican Republic Navy authorities, while the minors were placed in the care of the National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI).
Cmdr. Matthew Pinhey, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Doyle, remarked on the successful interdiction, emphasizing the collaboration among various federal and local law enforcement entities involved in Homeland Security Task Force operations, particularly highlighting partnerships with the Dominican Republic Navy. He noted the dangers posed by these maritime ventures, which often involve unseaworthy vessels lacking lifesaving equipment.
Participation in unlawful migration ventures can lead to prosecution or immediate return to the country of origin or departure.
This interdiction forms part of a broader initiative established by Executive Order 14159, aimed at protecting the American populace from invasion by eliminating the activities of criminal cartels, foreign gangs, and human trafficking organizations. The Homeland Security Task Force prioritizes interagency collaboration to address these critical issues and emphasizes the prosecution of those involved in child trafficking.
In its operations, the HSTF San Juan includes participation from federal partners such as the FBI, ICE, CBP, and several others, along with state and local law enforcement authorities.
Why It Matters
This incident highlights the continuing challenges of maritime migration in the region, the risks faced by migrants, and the ongoing efforts of U.S. authorities to address these complex issues. The repatriation of migrants underscores the need for coordinated law enforcement action to ensure safety and security in maritime environments while tackling human smuggling networks.
