Spanish golfer David Puig announced on Thursday that he will leave LIV Golf to join the DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour. This decision comes as LIV Golf undergoes restructuring, and Puig expressed his desire to pursue a fuller schedule in Europe.
During the Spanish Open, a DP World Tour event, Puig stated, “I don’t see myself playing in the LIV 2.0. It’s a decision I’ve made. I hope to play the European Tour next year, which I really enjoy, with a fuller schedule.”
The 24-year-old Puig, who had a successful amateur career and played collegially at Arizona State, participated in two LIV events while still an amateur in 2022 after turning professional. Although he did not secure an individual title in more than four years with LIV, he did maintain eligibility for some DP World Tour and Asian Tour events. His most notable victory came at the Australian PGA Championship last November.
By shifting his focus to the DP World Tour, Puig joins fellow Spaniards Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia in departing LIV Golf. Puig was a member of Garcia’s team, Fireballs GC. Garcia recently received a release from his LIV contract, allowing him to return to competitive play in Europe.
Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau is reportedly considering additional starts in Europe. Golf insider Alan Shipnuck noted that DeChambeau is weighing his options as LIV Golf looks to restructure, with a decision still pending. The Telegraph has indicated that DeChambeau’s team has reached out to DP World Tour officials about potential tournaments for 2027; however, he is not seeking membership in the European Tour.
Players must confirm their commitment to LIV Golf by October 25 for the upcoming season. The league requires assurances from a sufficient number of participants to meet financial obligations as it aligns with restructuring under BC Partners Credit.
