A plane crash in Florida on Sunday afternoon resulted in the deaths of all nine individuals on board. The incident occurred as the Learjet 60, which was en route from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, abruptly descended from an altitude of 37,000 feet.
According to authorities, the aircraft was reported to be descending at a rate of 20,000 feet per minute before it crashed onto a roadway outside Palm Beach. The crash has been described by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as “cataclysmic,” likening the plane’s descent to a missile striking the ground.
Investigators are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the flight. Preliminary radio communications between the pilot and Miami’s air traffic control indicated that the aircraft had been experiencing “light, clear ice” and moderate turbulence prior to its rapid descent. The pilot had requested permission to ascend to 37,000 feet, possibly to avoid the turbulent weather.
Moments later, she declared a mayday, identifying a life-threatening emergency. Reports reveal that the pilot warned air traffic controllers, “We’re going to crash into the ground,” just before the plane fell. The identities of the victims have not yet been released as investigations continue.
Officials are expected to provide additional information as the investigation unfolds, which will focus on both the flight conditions leading up to the crash and the technical operations of the aircraft.
