El Salvador Launches Major Military Operation in Haiti
The Government of El Salvador has initiated a significant military operation in Haiti aimed at locating and rescuing four Salvadoran service members who went missing after being ambushed by gangs. This operation began on October 22, 2026, with the deployment of approximately 100 elite soldiers from the Salvadoran special forces, who arrived at Toussaint Louverture Airport.
On October 23, a Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, provided at the request of the U.S. State Department, transported an additional 100 military personnel from El Salvador to Port-au-Prince. Flight activity escalated throughout the day, and current reports indicate that the total number of Salvadoran soldiers on the ground has reached 450, ready to conduct offensive actions if necessary.
The Special Operations Group of El Salvador, recognized for its expertise in counter-insurgency and asymmetric warfare, has equipped its forces with advanced technology and weapons for this operation. To support the deployment, a specialized cargo carrier delivered heavy equipment such as ammunition, tactical drones, and encrypted communication systems, which are critical for the success of the mission in hostile urban environments.
Given the nature of the operation, specific details about the cargo and equipment have not been disclosed for security reasons. However, it is known that the Salvadoran special forces typically utilize light drones for reconnaissance, encrypted communications to safeguard their operations, and advanced night-vision devices for nighttime missions.
The troops reportedly carry a range of weaponry, including M4A1 assault rifles, IWI Tavor rifles, and Galil ACE rifles, all designed for stealth operations. Snipers are equipped with precision rifles such as the M24, while light machine guns like the M249 SAW provide suppressive fire during engagements.
On the same day, President Nayib Bukele addressed concerns expressed by some regarding the dangers posed by gangs in Haiti. Through a post on his X account, he stressed the determination of his forces, stating, “Everyone who has enlisted is a believer, and we have entrusted this mission to God.” He invoked religious sentiment by asserting that their efforts would lead to victory, referencing biblical scripture to emphasize his faith in the success of the operation.
The situation in Haiti continues to evolve as Salvadoran troops prepare to confront the challenges posed by armed gangs. Further developments in this ongoing military operation are anticipated as the search for the missing personnel unfolds.
