The Dominican Republic offers eight international airports, each providing varying access to popular tourist regions. Choosing the right airport can significantly impact travel time to hotels, as proximity may not always indicate convenience.
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the main gateway for visitors heading to Cap Cana, Bávaro, and Uvero Alto. Located approximately 14 minutes from Cap Cana, the airport is known for handling high volumes of holiday traffic. During the peak season, which spans from November to just after spring break, travelers can face immigration waits of 1.5 to 3 hours, particularly over weekends. Midweek arrivals tend to be less congested, making them a preferable option for some travelers.
For those visiting La Romana or Casa de Campo, La Romana Airport (LRM) is a viable option, being just 16 minutes from Casa de Campo. However, flight availability can be limited, making PUJ a fallback choice. Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ), located about 39 minutes from the city center, serves as another alternative, especially for travelers looking to explore the historic Colonial Zone.
Samaná Airport (AZS) is closer to Las Terrenas, approximately one hour away, but its limited flight schedule can complicate travel plans. Without a flight to AZS, travelers should consider flying into SDQ, which leads to a roughly 2-hour and 25-minute drive to Las Terrenas.
For the northern coast, travelers should use Puerto Plata Airport (POP) to access areas like Sosúa and Cabarete. If flights into POP do not align with travel plans, Santiago Airport (STI) serves as a secondary option due to its broader connectivity. Ride-hailing apps function effectively in Santiago but are unreliable at PUJ and within Punta Cana due to local transport regulations.
Travelers are advised to arrange their airport transportation ahead of time, particularly at PUJ, where authorized taxis are the most reliable option. Private transfer services, like those offered by Transekur, ensure drivers meet travelers at the airport, track flights, and provide direct transfers to hotels without additional stops.
As high season approaches, travelers may experience varying conditions such as immigration delays and potential seaweed issues on the eastern beaches. Those considering flights should look into the precise airport accessibility based on their hotel’s location to optimize their travel experience.
