At least 11 people were killed on Monday in Haiti’s central Artibonite region as a result of gang violence that followed a security operation conducted by a multinational force, according to local officials.
Details of the Incident
The violence occurred shortly after a unit from a UN-supported gang suppression force, which is primarily comprised of personnel from Sri Lanka, intervened in an area experiencing significant gang activity. This operation targeted gangs that had established illegal toll points in the farming region, known for its agricultural production.
During the encounter, three members of the gang were reportedly killed. Mayor Hubert Ceneac indicated that the security force conducted their operations briefly before returning to their base in the town of Gonaives.
In the aftermath of the operation, Ceneac stated that gang members retaliated against local residents, resulting in the deaths of 11 to 12 individuals, as well as the burning of homes. This incident highlights the ongoing struggles faced by communities in regions plagued by gang violence, particularly in the Artibonite area where the Kokorat San Ras gang is known to operate.
Rosy Ducena, the head of the National Human Rights Defence Network, noted that the total number of casualties and the extent of damages are still being assessed, although reports indicate multiple members from a single family may have been killed.
The situation in Haiti regarding security has deteriorated significantly, with gang violence spreading beyond the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The impact of this crisis has raised concerns not only for local residents but also for international stakeholders involved in addressing security challenges in the country. The mandate of the ongoing gang suppression force is set to expire this week unless renewed by the United Nations Security Council, which is scheduled to vote on the matter on Tuesday.
As Haiti continues to grapple with escalating violence, the international community’s response will be crucial in determining the future of security efforts in the region.
Why It Matters
The violence in Haiti underscores the complex challenges the country faces as it seeks to achieve stability and safety for its citizens. The ongoing conflict between armed groups poses a significant hurdle to governance and humanitarian efforts, affecting not only local populations but also broader international interests in the region.
