The American premium, handmade cigar market has shown resilience in the first half of 2026, as new data indicates imports have remained stable compared to the previous year. The Cigar Association of America has reported that 199.5 million premium cigars were imported into the United States during this period, a slight decrease from 200.5 million in the first half of 2025.
Market Composition and Trends
Most of the premium cigars consumed in the U.S. are produced in three countries: Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. This trio, referred to as “The Big Three,” constitutes nearly 98 percent of all handmade cigar imports. In the first half of 2026, Nicaragua maintained its dominant position as the leading exporter with 121.6 million cigars shipped, representing 60.1 percent of all imports. This figure reflects a 1.5 percent decrease from 123.5 million in the same period last year.
The Dominican Republic experienced a notable decline as well, with shipments falling to 38 million premium cigars, down 7.7 percent from 41.2 million in 2025, which accounts for 19 percent of total imports. Conversely, Honduras reported a 10 percent increase in shipments, rising from 34 million to 37.5 million cigars, securing 18.8 percent of the market share.
Throughout 2025, U.S. imports of premium, handmade cigars reached 429.8 million, maintaining a consistent level with 2024. This marks the fifth consecutive year that imports have surpassed 400 million cigars, a significant increase from just 338 million in 2019.
While the surge in cigar demand that began in late 2020 appears to be stabilizing, the market demonstrates a strong and consistent demand for premium handmade cigars in the United States.
As the industry evolves, stakeholders are observing trends and shifts that could further impact import figures and consumer preferences in the future.
