CHARLESTON — Individuals who were unable to obtain tickets for two popular programs at the Spoleto Festival USA, which are part of the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, will have an alternative opportunity to experience them through free livestreams. This announcement was made on May 6, emphasizing the festival’s commitment to broadening access to its events.
Free Livestreams of Spoleto Festival Programs
In collaboration with SC250, Spoleto Festival USA will offer livestreams of “An Evening with Ken Burns” and “George + George” due to high demand for tickets. This initiative aims to engage a wider audience in meaningful cultural conversations and experiences that extend beyond the physical confines of the performance venue.
Mena Mark Hanna, the general director and CEO of Spoleto Festival, commented on the partnership, highlighting the importance of reaching out to audiences in innovative ways. “We’re pleased to work with SC250 to create new ways for audiences to participate in these important conversations,” he stated.
“An Evening with Ken Burns” blends conversation with performance, showcasing music and imagery that reflect the nation’s struggles and ideals during the war for independence. This program promises to offer an engaging exploration of America’s historical context through the lens of the acclaimed filmmaker.
The second program, “George + George,” marks a world premiere by playwrights Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson. Set at Valley Forge, this work combines humor and theatrical elements to explore themes of democracy and leadership while interrogating the ideals that underpin the commemorative observance of America’s 250 years.
Marissa Sams, executive director of SC250 Charleston, expressed pride in the cultural programming set up in conjunction with the Spoleto Festival. She noted that the livestreams enhance Charleston’s commitment to honoring history and providing public opportunities for engagement with it.
Both programs will be simulcast at the Charleston Visitor Center. “An Evening with Ken Burns” will be streamed at 8 p.m. on May 27, followed by “George + George” at 5 p.m. on May 30, allowing the community to participate in these unique events.
Why It Matters: The availability of these livestreams not only democratizes access to significant cultural programming but also fosters a wider appreciation of American history and its interpretations through the arts. By utilizing technology to reach broader audiences, the Spoleto Festival and SC250 enhance community engagement and educational opportunities related to the nation’s milestone anniversary.
