Haiti will aim for a draw against Costa Rica on Sunday to secure its spot in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals. The match is part of Group A, where Haiti currently sits in a strong position.
Costa Rica, however, faces an uphill battle. Even with a win, the team cannot advance in the tournament, having achieved only one victory in three group-stage matches. Currently in fourth place, Costa Rica is six points behind the top two teams, making it impossible to qualify for the quarterfinals. Nonetheless, they can still qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup preliminaries if they finish third or fourth, with Trinidad and Tobago and Nicaragua currently without any points.
In their previous matchup last month, Haiti defeated Costa Rica 2-0 in Kingston. The upcoming game will be played in Tibas, where Costa Rica hopes to leverage the home-field advantage. After the loss to Haiti, Costa Rica parted ways with head coach Fernando Batista, appointing interim coach Bryan Ruiz, who enjoyed a 3-0 victory against Nicaragua in his debut on Thursday.
Haiti, now led by head coach David Badia, has found recent success, winning all three matches since his appointment in the summer. They remain undefeated in their last six encounters with Costa Rica, boasting three wins and three draws dating back to 2019.
