Launch of the National Community Reforestation Strategy in Haiti
On September 17, 2026, the Haitian Minister of the Environment, Valéry Fils-Aimé, officially unveiled the National Community Reforestation Strategy. The initiative aims to restore degraded landscapes, enhance vegetation cover, and incorporate community involvement in the sustainable management of natural resources.
Details of the Strategy
The newly launched strategy is designed to accelerate ecosystem restoration and leverage these efforts for local economic development. It seeks to create green jobs and improve living conditions for the Haitian population. During the launch event, Minister Fils-Aimé highlighted the aim of transitioning from environmental spending to productive investments that primarily benefit young people, women, and rural producers.
The ceremony included participation from various government officials, including Minister of Public Works Joseph Almathe Pierre-Louis, Minister of the Status of Women Pédrica Saint-Jean, and Minister of Health Sinal Bertrand. Minister of Agriculture Marcelin Aubourg joined the event via video link, underscoring the critical role of farmers in identifying suitable intervention areas and species for reforestation.
Aubourg emphasized that reforestation requires a comprehensive approach, integrating watershed development, soil restoration, and agroforestry practices. Effective coordination among public institutions, local authorities, communities, and partners is essential for achieving these objectives.
The Director of the Directorate of Forests and Renewable Energy, Agr. Eder Audate, outlined the vision and objectives of the strategy, which includes restoring over 50,000 hectares of degraded land by 2031. Additionally, the plan aims to establish or enhance 100 community nurseries across ten departments, engage more than 50,000 households, and create or support over 10,000 green jobs.
The initiative also includes measures for monitoring restored areas to assess outcomes and document contributions towards Haiti’s climate and environmental goals. Joseph Emmanuel Philippe, Coordinator of the Technical Secretariat of the General Directorate, urged technical and financial partners, ecological organizations, and the private sector to support the implementation of the strategy.
Backed by organizations such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Heifer International, the National Community Reforestation Strategy represents a collaborative effort to bolster ecological restoration and strengthen community resilience in Haiti.
Why It Matters
The launch of the National Community Reforestation Strategy is a significant step towards addressing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable economic opportunities in Haiti. By engaging local communities in restoration efforts, the strategy not only aims to improve ecological health but also seeks to enhance the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, fostering a more resilient future.
