Matildas winger Hayley Raso expressed sadness over Mary Fowler’s withdrawal from upcoming matches against Germany and Haiti due to personal reasons. Football Australia confirmed Fowler’s departure on Tuesday, announcing that Leah Davidson will take her place in the squad.
According to Football Australia, Fowler’s decision was reached after discussions involving her, Manchester City, and Matildas staff. “Mary Fowler has been withdrawn from the October international window due to personal circumstances,” the organization’s statement read.
Raso highlighted Fowler’s importance to the team, stating, “Mary’s a really valuable player for our team, so it’s sad that she’s not here at this camp, but obviously she has to take care of some personal circumstances.” Raso added that she had just learned of Fowler’s situation and looked forward to Davidson’s return to the squad.
Fowler recently made her 100th appearance for Manchester City during a 4-2 win over Arsenal in the English Women’s Super League, where she entered as a second-half substitute.
The Matildas are currently preparing for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with matches scheduled against Germany in Karlsruhe on Saturday morning (AEDT) and Haiti in France next Wednesday (AEDT). Raso emphasized the importance of these matches for the team’s preparation. “The goal for us is preparing for the World Cup, and making sure we’re at the top of our game,” she said.
Raso also mentioned her familiarity with several players on the German squad, noting the tough competition they pose. “Playing against Germany before and playing in the league, I know how tough, physical, and strong they are,” she said. “These are the type of games we need to prepare us for what’s to come next year.”
With a focus on confidence and teamwork, Raso described the Matildas camp as a competitive environment where players strive to earn starting positions while working towards a common objective. She is optimistic about the upcoming games, viewing them as essential building blocks for future success.
