A tragic incident unfolded in Santo Domingo Oeste, Dominican Republic, where Zeneida Castillo, the wife of merengue singer Julián Oro Duro, was murdered during a home robbery. The attack occurred on Sunday, as Castillo unwittingly offered lemonade to her alleged assailants, whose identities have since been revealed by authorities.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, 23-year-old Kevin Germán and 18-year-old Lawrence “Chiquito” Liranzo were welcomed into Castillo’s home. Liranzo was reportedly known to Castillo, as he had worked for her husband. Initially offering them water, she later decided to prepare lemonade, engaging them in conversation for approximately 40 minutes.
In a shocking turn of events, Liranzo struck Castillo with a flower vase and subsequently choked her. Germán claimed he did not participate in the physical assault but stated that he was threatened by Liranzo if he attempted to flee. During the incident, Castillo’s elderly mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, was confined to a bedroom.
Following this brutal attack, Liranzo allegedly stabbed Castillo multiple times. Germán and Liranzo were directed by Phillips Tejada, an associate of Julián Oro Duro, to remain in the home until the singer returned from a performance, further escalating the situation. Tejada provided them information on a stash of cash stored in the residence.
When Julián Oro Duro, whose real name is Gilberto Sarante, arrived home early Monday morning, he was attacked by Liranzo, who struck him with a statue before stealing his gold necklace and fleeing the scene.
Sarante was later hospitalized for injuries, including an intracranial hemorrhage, and underwent surgery. He was discharged from the hospital shortly thereafter.
Authorities arrested Germán on Wednesday after he recorded an interview divulging details about the incident. Liranzo, Tejada, and another accomplice, Juan Hernández, were arrested in subsequent days. Their initial court appearance, initially scheduled for Friday, has been postponed to September 30.
Investigators recovered substantial amounts of cash and valuables from the suspects’ residences, totaling over $30,000 and additional personal items, including a Rolex watch.
The death of Zeneida Castillo has sparked outrage in the Dominican Republic, prompting calls for increased action against rising crime rates. During her funeral, various artists expressed their concerns about public safety, comparing the current situation to past crime levels in other countries, which have since seen improvements under new leadership.
