As financial markets continue to draw interest from individual investors, technology has evolved to simplify tracking investments. Two prominent tools available for users are Google Finance and Apple’s Stocks app, both of which offer free services tailored for monitoring various financial assets.

Overview of Google Finance and Apple Stocks

Google Finance has been a resource for nearly two decades. This summer, an enhanced version was unveiled, incorporating artificial intelligence features for better investment monitoring and market trend analysis. Users can access an Android app, while an iOS version is underway.

The new features of Google Finance include a disclaimer emphasizing that its content is for informational purposes only and not financial advice. Users can import data by dragging and dropping files such as spreadsheets into the online platform. However, this information does not currently sync with the mobile app.

The Android app enables users to manually add ticker symbols to custom portfolios and watchlists. It also provides live feeds of stock prices and market news, along with insights into price movements attributed to specific market factors. Users are advised that while the AI tools can provide suggestions, they may also make errors.

On the other hand, Apple’s Stocks app has been a staple on iPhones since their launch in 2007. This preinstalled app is compatible with various Apple products, including Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches. If deleted, it can be re-downloaded from the App Store.

The Stocks app allows users to create personalized watchlists, track performance by ticker symbols, and stay updated with market news. The integration of Siri enables users to check stock information even while the app is closed. Additionally, users can add a Stocks widget to their home screens for quick access.

While Google and Apple offer foundational tools, other financial apps, including Yahoo Finance, provide additional services for tracking investments. Yahoo’s mobile platforms include both free and subscription-based options, allowing users to link brokerage accounts through secure services like Yodlee.

Why It Matters

As more individuals engage in investment strategies, free financial apps play an essential role in enhancing financial literacy and accessibility. By providing insights and tracking capabilities, these tools empower users in their financial decision-making, helping them better understand their portfolios and the factors influencing market movements.
