NASA is collaborating with local farmers in Lubbock, Texas, to enhance crop management through remote sensing technology. This initiative, known as NASA Acres, aims to assist farmers in evaluating the needs of their crops more effectively.
NASA Acres Collaborates with Local Nonprofit
Tillery Sims, director of the Sandhill Area Research Association, a nonprofit organization partnering with NASA Acres, explained that the initiative stems from NASA Harvest, which focused on global agricultural monitoring. “NASA Acres is the part of NASA that is directed to look at specifically how to help American farmers,” Sims said.
The primary objective of this partnership is to help farmers utilize remote sensing to maximize their land’s productivity. Sims noted that the initiative explores optimal planting times and innovative production methods not currently covered by insurance, as well as expanding on a project aimed at mapping cover crops.
Development of an Agricultural App
A significant component of this collaboration is the development of an app designed to give farmers real-time access to their crop data. Conner Watts, a participating farmer, is providing feedback for the software. “Yes, this app will help farmers have more tangible data. It’s processed in the app that’s very user-friendly, easy to use, easy to read. And so, it could really help farmers make more, better decisions throughout the growing season,” Watts stated.
The app will allow users to monitor various factors affecting crop performance, including crop color, health, soil moisture, and potential pest issues. Watts, a first-generation farmer, expressed optimism about the technology’s potential to ensure the sustainability of his farming practices for future generations.
“I think tools like this, especially the ones that essentially, we’ve already paid for with our tax dollars, are crucial,” Watts added. He highlighted that he already uses several programs from third-party companies and sees the value in leveraging every available resource to enhance his agricultural operations.
Sims emphasized her commitment to supporting producers by addressing the financial challenges they face and helping them seize new opportunities in agriculture.
