Latino voters are increasingly disenchanted with President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, particularly regarding economic issues, according to a recent NBC/Telemundo poll released on Sunday. The survey indicates that 59% of Latino voters would prefer Democrats to gain control of Congress in the upcoming November elections, compared to 35% who favor Republicans. This is a notable shift from a 12-point Democratic margin among these voters at the same time in the previous election cycle, although it is not as strong as the Democratic preference seen ahead of the 2018 midterms.
The poll highlights a significant change in sentiment among the approximately 36 million Latino voters in the U.S. Historically known for their overwhelming support for Democratic candidates, they played a pivotal role in Trump’s 2024 election victory, where he received 46% of the Latino vote, slightly trailing Democrat Kamala Harris, who garnered 51%.
Currently, only 27% of Latino voters express approval for Trump’s overall job performance, with an even lower 20% approving of his handling of the cost of living. On immigration, Trump receives a slightly higher approval rating of 30%, though a substantial two-thirds of respondents believe his administration’s approach to immigration enforcement has been overly aggressive. Approximately one-quarter of Latino voters reported knowing someone who has been deported or detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement within the past two years.
The poll also reveals a rising discontent with the Republican Party, as 62% of Latino voters rate it negatively, up from 46% in September 2024. Additionally, 48% of respondents believe Democrats would manage the economy more effectively than Republicans, who garnered 27% in this view.
These findings align with a CBS/YouGov poll released the same day, which indicates that 60% of Latino likely voters would favor a Democratic candidate over a Republican in their House district. Overall, the CBS poll shows that likely voters nationwide lean towards Democrats by a 9-point margin, consistent with other recent generic ballot polling trends.
In another insight from the CBS poll, 56% of registered voters believe Trump is performing worse in his second term compared to his first, and 70% attribute rising food and grocery prices to his policies.
