Researchers have successfully created hypoallergenic dogs using a gene editing technique, providing hope for millions affected by dog-related allergies. The breakthrough came from scientists at Kindred Companion Sciences, who developed a beagle named Bailey and her twin Alfie. This advancement allows individuals like geneticist Matt Walker, who has long struggled with allergies, to interact with dogs without adverse reactions.

Innovation in Gene Editing

Walker’s allergies prevented him from having a pet dog during his childhood, but the innovative process alleviated his concerns. By employing CRISPR, a Nobel Prize-winning gene editing method, researchers altered the genetic makeup of skin cells in dogs. The goal was to deactivate the gene responsible for producing a protein that triggers allergic reactions.

Once the genetic code was modified, the edited cells were introduced into eggs that were implanted in a beagle surrogate. This resulted in the birth of two healthy beagle puppies in September 2024. Initial tests conducted on the pups showed no presence of the allergy-inducing protein in their saliva or fur.

The significance of this research is emphasized by bioethicist Arthur Caplan, who noted that while this advancement could make pet ownership accessible to more people, it may unintentionally reduce support for animal rescues and shelters. Concerns were also raised by Dr. Jeff SoRelle, a pathologist, regarding the broader applicability and long-term safety of this genetic modification.

Previous attempts at creating hypoallergenic pets primarily involved cloning, which resulted in health issues due to a lack of genetic diversity. Walker stated that despite the ongoing challenges of commercialization and monitoring the health of these genetically modified dogs, the initial results are promising.

In addition to ongoing health assessments, future research will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of this technique across a wider range of dog breeds and service animals. It remains to be seen whether this gene-editing approach can ease symptoms for a broader population of allergy sufferers.

For now, Bailey enjoys a life with Walker in New York, where he can cuddle and play with her, free from allergy-induced discomfort. The prospect of providing a pet dog to those with allergies marks a significant step forward in the field of genetics and animal companionship.
