A new species of cat has been identified by scientists, marking the first discovery of its kind in over a century. Named the Leopardus tilcayo, or the tilcayo tiger cat, this small feline is notable for its adorable appearance and ferocious demeanor. Researchers published their findings in the scientific journal Current Biology, detailing the unique features and habitat of this newly recognized species.
A Mysterious Kitten in Bolivia Turned Out to Be an Entirely New Cat Species
The tilcayo tiger cat weighs approximately three pounds and measures around 18 inches in length. It is characterized by a distinct scrunched-up face, which gives the impression of a continual mild scowl. The cat’s coat features oversized rosettes, and its behavior reflects a certain attitude necessary for survival in its native environment—the Bolivian Andes.
The tilcayo tiger cat was first encountered in 2016 when a local man brought a cat to a wildlife center, mistakenly believing it to be an unusual domestic kitten. National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, a co-author of the study, had the opportunity to observe the tilcayo tiger cat closely, leading to further investigation.
Initially, researchers assumed that the cat belonged to the Brazilian tiger cat species. However, genetic analysis led by Nogales-Ascarrunz revealed that this lineage diverged from other tiger cats roughly 1.4 million years ago, confirming its status as a separate species. Although previously unrecognized by scientists, the tilcayo tiger cat has long been acknowledged by local indigenous communities.
The discovery of this new species enhances the tiger cat family tree, which now consists of five distinct species. However, researchers emphasize the urgency of studying the tilcayo tiger cat due to threats posed by deforestation and development in the Yungas cloud forest, its natural habitat. Without immediate action, these cats could face a future classification as endangered.
Why It Matters: The identification of the tilcayo tiger cat underscores the importance of biodiversity and the ongoing need for conservation efforts. As human activities increasingly encroach upon natural habitats, understanding and protecting new species becomes essential for maintaining ecological balance.
