The Spoleto Festival USA is set to feature a diverse array of jazz performances in Charleston this year, highlighting both established and emerging artists. With support from longtime partner Wells Fargo, the festival will present a series of jazz artist residencies, showcasing top national performers in intimate local settings.
Festival Highlights
Among the featured artists is Sullivan Fortner, a Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist who returns to the festival following a successful collaboration last year. Fortner, acclaimed for his improvisational talent, has two performances scheduled. The first will showcase his 2023 album, “Solo Game,” with shows at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on June 5 at the Simons Center Recital Hall. His second performance involves a trio featuring bassist Tyrone Allen II and drummer Kayvon Gordon, planned for June 6, where they will explore new material alongside selections from his award-winning album “Southern Nights.”
Fortner expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the festival, noting the welcoming atmosphere of Charleston. His career includes performances with notable figures such as Wynton Marsalis and Paul Simon, and he has received multiple accolades, including the Gilmore Award and this year’s Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Recording.
Another notable artist, Mali Obomsawin, is gaining recognition as a bassist, singer, and composer. A member of the Odanak First Nation, Obomsawin blends jazz with influences from ’90s punk and folk. She has been involved in significant projects, including scoring for the National Geographic documentary “Sugarcane,” which received an Oscar nomination. Her performances at the festival will feature repertoire from her album “Sweet Tooth” and will highlight the collective talents of her collaborators.
Obomsawin is set to perform twice alongside Alana Amore Colvin, Yuma Uesaka, and Zack O’Farrill on May 23 and 24 at the Dock Street Theatre. Additionally, she will host a free Jazz Talk session titled “My Improvised Truth” on May 24 at the College of Charleston.
For those interested in attending, tickets for all artists’ programs can be obtained through the Spoleto Festival’s official website.
Why It Matters: The Spoleto Festival USA is an essential platform for both established jazz artists and upcoming talent, fostering cultural exchange and artistic collaboration while enriching Charleston’s music scene.
