A recent collection of advice on solving the Connections game has been compiled following an inquiry that attracted nearly 600 responses from players. The guidance includes insights from Wyna Liu, the game’s editor since 2023, who has authored over 1,200 puzzles, as well as contributions from avid solvers.
Essential Guidelines for Players
The Connections board consists of a four-by-four grid of tiles, each containing a word or phrase. Players must categorize the tiles into four distinct groups based on shared characteristics, with each puzzle having a single solution. Categories are specific and can vary widely, such as “types of pools” or “places with nets.”
Players are encouraged to brainstorm potential categories before making their guesses. Ellen Barish, a solver from Boca Raton, Florida, shared her strategy of writing down categories outside the game, stating, “I try to plan ahead and find at least one or two more groups of four before entering the first group.” This method helps players organize their thoughts as they approach the board.
Despite the general advice to start with easier categories, Liu noted that difficulty is subjective. “What’s harder, music or movies?” she asked, highlighting that each category can present various challenges to different players. The game consistently includes trivia in certain categories, while others may delve into more complex themes.
As players continue to seek strategies to improve their solving techniques, experts suggest finding what works best for each individual. The game’s design emphasizes both creativity and critical thinking, making it a unique testing ground for players’ problem-solving skills.
With the growing interest in Connections, players can anticipate a steady flow of new puzzles, offering fresh challenges and opportunities for mastery.
