WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—Mavis, the leading tire retailer in suburban New York, has solidified its dominance in the auto-repair market with a series of strategic acquisitions, including its recent purchase of Midas, a well-known name in the industry. The company now operates approximately 4,400 locations across nearly every state, positioning itself as the largest auto-repair chain in the United States.
Stephen Sorbaro, who co-manages Mavis with his brother David, highlighted the company’s growth since they took over from their parents in 1985. He noted that while there are many competitors in the market, they often struggle to achieve the scale necessary to compete effectively. “There are other folks out there that understand the business but they are challenged by scale,” he said.
The demand for auto-repair services is rising as American drivers are increasingly holding on to their vehicles. With the average age of cars on U.S. roads now about 13 years—a historic high that represents a 10% increase from a decade ago—drivers are facing higher costs associated with purchasing new cars. Factors such as heightened vehicle prices, longer lifespan of modern cars, tightening household budgets, and elevated interest rates are contributing to this trend.
As Mavis expands its presence in the auto-repair sector, it will continue to adapt to the changing needs of consumers. The company’s emphasis on growth through acquisitions is expected to play a significant role in navigating the challenges in the evolving automotive landscape.
