Charleston, SC – The design for the 2026 Piccolo Spoleto Festival poster has been officially unveiled. Created by artist Alice Colin, the poster features a collection of faces juxtaposed with a fragmented depiction of Charleston’s cityscape, set beneath a display of botanical elements. Colin’s artwork, titled “Voices in Bloom,” has garnered significant recognition, receiving a $5,000 commission which is noted as the highest amount ever awarded for a Piccolo poster.
Artist and Festival Background
Rochelle Riley, the newly appointed director of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs, praised Colin’s work, stating it embodies the beauty of Charleston through its depiction of the city’s music, nature, and community. Colin, originally from Bordeaux, France, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist with experiences across four continents before settling in Charleston with her family. Her diverse artistic repertoire includes digital, mixed-media, and 3D compositions.
The selection of Colin’s design followed an open call in April, where her unique perspective was chosen to represent the festival. The poster was officially launched at a ceremony on May 8 at City Gallery.
The Piccolo Spoleto Festival is scheduled to commence on May 22, coinciding with Spoleto USA and will highlight local excellence through a variety of artistic expressions, including visual arts, classical music, jazz, dance, theater, choral performances, poetry readings, children’s activities, and film screenings. This year’s festival theme, “from here,” invites attendees to appreciate the distinct artistry and traditions that define Charleston.
Notably, the 2026 season is anticipated to be the largest since the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than half of the 250 scheduled events offered free to the public. Longstanding traditional events, such as the Sunset Serenade featuring the Charleston Symphony at the United States Custom House and the Memorial Day Concert at Hampton Park, are set to continue. New initiatives, including the Piccolo Porch Concerts—an intimate series inspired by NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts—are being introduced to enhance the festival experience.
