JUNEAU, Alaska — President Donald Trump has called for the criminal prosecution of Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola after reports suggested her campaign had a role in recruiting a candidate with the same name as incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. Trump made these comments on Wednesday, responding to revelations from a New York Times article. He stated, “I think they should be prosecuted,” and added on social media that “Peltola should suffer the Legal and Political consequences for what she has done.”
The controversy arose from text messages indicating that Peltola’s campaign had discussed the recruitment of individuals named Dan Sullivan. They ultimately chose Dan J. Sullivan, a retired schoolteacher from Petersburg, who is now on the ballot for the upcoming general election scheduled for next Tuesday.
Earlier this year, a top state elections official ruled that Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy was filed “with a purpose to confuse or mislead,” but the Alaska Supreme Court later determined he was eligible to run. Dan J. Sullivan has repeatedly denied any connection to Peltola’s campaign, stating there was “zero” contact between them.
Peltola’s campaign responded to the outcry by asserting that their focus remains on addressing the needs of Alaskans. They stated, “Mary got in this race because Alaskans deserve a champion who is fighting to lower their costs and put Alaska first, and no tweet or threat from any DC politician will keep her away from that fight.”
Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican who has endorsed Sullivan, criticized Peltola, suggesting there has been a pattern of dishonesty within her campaign. She called for transparency, stating, “Alaskans deserve the honest truth from Mary and her campaign.” Sullivan’s campaign spokesperson accused Peltola and her senior advisers of colluding with national Democratic operatives to recruit candidates aimed at misleading voters.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has denied any involvement in the recruitment effort, with spokespersons claiming they had no connection to the situation. Legal experts believe the controversy surrounding the recruitment will not affect a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, which seeks to prevent the certification of a potential Peltola victory due to the presence of the other Dan Sullivan on the ballot.
Derek Muller, a law professor at Notre Dame, described the reported recruitment as a “dirty campaign trick,” suggesting the matter is now in the hands of voters rather than legal proceedings. As of Monday, voter participation appears active, with 46,204 ballots already cast in Alaska.
Mary Peltola and Dan J. Sullivan will face off alongside other candidates in the ranked voting general election set for November 3, where Dan Sullivan is listed as the Republican incumbent and Dan J. Sullivan as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., without any party affiliation.
