The Colorado Rapids have finalized a significant transfer deal to acquire English winger Morgan Whittaker from Middlesbrough for a record fee of $10.7 million. The agreement was completed just ahead of the closing of the summer transfer window in Major League Soccer (MLS), which is set to close on Wednesday night.
Whittaker is expected to arrive in the United States following a medical examination completed in London on Tuesday. His signing marks a new club record for the Rapids, surpassing the previous record of $7 million paid to sign American attacker Paxten Aaronson.
The Move and Its Implications
Whittaker, 23, signed with Middlesbrough for approximately $9.5 million from Plymouth Argyle in January 2025. He had a productive season last year, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists in 40 appearances.
The acquisition reflects an ongoing strategy by the Rapids, under coach Matt Wells, to enhance their attacking options, particularly through wide play. Whittaker is anticipated to play a pivotal роль in this revamped attacking strategy.
In conjunction with Whittaker’s signing, Colorado has also agreed to transfer forward Rafa Navarro to St. Louis City for $12 million. Additionally, the Rapids are set to sign rising Israeli forward Sayed Abu Farkhi for $6 million. These moves collectively indicate a significant overhaul of the team’s frontline.
This transfer activity follows the recent transfer of center back Lucas Herrington to Hull City for an initial fee of $17 million, one of the most substantial transactions in MLS history.
Currently, the Rapids are positioned seventh in the Western Conference, accumulating 31 points from 22 matches. The team has displayed solid defensive capabilities with five consecutive clean sheets, although improvements in offensive output are necessary.
Why It Matters: The Colorado Rapids’ investment in Morgan Whittaker underscores a commitment to building a competitive roster as they aim for an impactful season. With the closure of the transfer window approaching, the team’s strategic decisions will shape their performance in the games ahead and influence their standing in the highly competitive MLS landscape.
