LONDON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – Prince William transformed The Mall, a prominent thoroughfare leading to Buckingham Palace, into a cricket pitch on Tuesday, engaging in an informal game with notable cricket stars to promote his Earthshot Prize initiative. The Prince was joined by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, West Indies icon Brian Lara, and current England captain Joe Root for the event.
The game took place in the heart of London, often used for grand royal events, as part of a campaign to celebrate the connections between Britain and India. The Earthshot Prize awards ceremony will be held in Mumbai next month. William, dressed casually in a shirt and sweater, showcased his cricket skills by playing alongside Ganguly, who later commented, “He batted alright,” when asked for his opinion on the Prince’s performance.
During the event, which featured laughter and selfies with spectators, Prince William aimed to raise awareness about the Earthshot Prize, which was established in 2020. The initiative awards five winners £1 million each to help develop solutions for environmental challenges.
This playful engagement in cricket preceded the upcoming summit and awards ceremony in India, emphasizing the enthusiasm both nations share for the sport. The Earthshot Prize serves not only as a celebration of innovation but also a reminder of the collaborative efforts needed to address global environmental issues.
As preparations continue for the awards ceremony in Mumbai, this unique display of sportsmanship by Prince William highlights his ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and international collaboration.
