A bedroom in Athens, Georgia, belonging to University of Georgia student Emily Arjune has been characterized by its unique blend of warmth and whimsy. Emphasizing personal interests and memories, Arjune’s space serves as both a retreat and a reflection of her identity.
Personalizing a Student Living Space
The three-bedroom apartment in The Woodlands came semi-furnished, providing basic furniture for the living and dining areas. However, Arjune has infused her bedroom with a mix of items from her childhood home and purchases from online retailers. Notable pieces include her bed frame, desk, and various posters and rugs that contribute to the overall atmosphere.
Arjune describes her design aesthetic as “warm, cozy and whimsy,” drawing inspiration primarily from the platform Pinterest. The ambiance is heightened by soft lighting, including a red Spider-Man lamp, and complemented by a collection of artwork, plants, and completed puzzles that fill the room. A prominent feature is a giant beanbag chair, strategically positioned for the best view of her television.
“I love my beanbag chair,” Arjune shared. “I placed it right specifically there so I could watch TV at a good angle.” The oversized chair was acquired through an online order and adds a playful element to the space.
Another significant aspect of the room is a shelf adorned with not only decorative items but also sentimental pieces. “I just put little knickknacks that I’ve accumulated over the years,” Arjune explained. These include favorites from Marvel, Lego creations, and gifts from friends, creating a vivid representation of her relationships and interests.
For Arjune, the room transcends mere aesthetics; it functions as a sanctuary that promotes comfort and self-expression. The combination of warm tones and personal artifacts fosters a welcoming atmosphere where she can unwind and reflect on the important aspects of her life.
“I’d say my room reflects me very much in my interests and my aesthetics,” Arjune noted, emphasizing the personal nature of her space.
As students navigate their educational journeys, the ability to personalize living spaces can play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and comfort within their environments.
Why It Matters
The personal touch in student accommodations highlights the importance of creating spaces that reflect individual identities and interests. Such environments can enhance emotional well-being and provide a supportive atmosphere for academic pursuits.
