Starting on October 2, 2023, the Science Museum in London will launch a new space-themed experience titled “Pokémon Space Trail.” Created in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), the initiative aims to draw connections between the virtual world of Pokémon and real narratives from European space science.
Experience Overview
The Pokémon Space Trail will be featured across several galleries within the museum, where visitors can engage in a journey that intertwines their favorite Pokémon with significant scientific themes. Libby Jackson, the head of space at the Science Museum, commented on the experience, highlighting that it offers an adventure of discovery that connects Pokémon to scientific principles.
Large-scale installations will showcase beloved Pokémon characters, including Pikachu, Lunatone, and Arceus. One notable segment of the trail, located in the museum’s Space gallery, will focus on NASA’s and ESA’s plans for lunar exploration as part of the Artemis Program while also illustrating the moon’s significance within the Pokémon universe.
Upon completing the trail, attendees will have the opportunity to visit a dedicated Pokémon gift shop situated on the museum’s mezzanine level. The shop will feature a variety of Pokémon and ESA merchandise, including a limited availability of astronaut Pikachu plush toys. Guests wishing to enter the shop must book a free timed ticket in advance, and purchase limits will be enforced for certain items.
The gift shop will also host a wider selection of Pokémon merchandise such as clothing, stationery, and selected trading card game products from the Scarlet & Violet series.
Mathieu Galante, the senior director of licensing at the Pokémon Company International, remarked on the event’s theme, emphasizing that every Pokémon journey is rooted in a sense of wonder about the unknown, linking exploration in the Pokémon world to real-life adventures in space.
The Pokémon Space Trail event will be open from October 2, 2023, through January 3, 2027. This initiative reflects a growing trend of engaging younger audiences with science through popular culture.
Why It Matters: The Pokémon Space Trail represents a significant intersection of education and entertainment, aiming to inspire curiosity about space science among visitors of all ages while promoting STEM education through a popular cultural lens.
