In a significant boost for the African electric mobility sector, the Africa Go Green Fund (AGG) has announced an additional investment of $18 million in Spiro, bringing the fund’s total commitment to the company to $36 million. This decision comes less than a year following AGG’s initial backing of $18 million alongside $7 million from Nithio.
Funding to Expand Electric Mobility Initiatives
The newly allocated funds will support Spiro’s ongoing efforts to deploy more electric motorcycles and expand its battery-swapping infrastructure in Uganda and Rwanda. Since the inception of its operations, Spiro has successfully deployed over 135,000 electric motorcycles across several African countries and has facilitated more than 50 million battery swaps in its active markets.
Spiro’s network appears to be evolving rapidly, with new mega battery-swap stations introduced in Kenya and Rwanda. These stations aim to enhance the user experience by providing easier access to fully charged batteries for riders.
According to AGG’s managing director, Laurène Aigrain, the decision to increase the investment reflects the progress made by Spiro and underscores the fund’s confidence in the company’s future growth. Aigrain remarked that by enhancing the accessibility and affordability of electric mobility solutions, Spiro is addressing two major challenges: reducing transportation emissions and offering a cost-effective mobility alternative for riders.
Gagan Gupta, the founder of Spiro, expressed that the increased commitment from AGG signifies a strong endorsement of Spiro’s initiatives and the potential of electric mobility in Africa. Gupta emphasized the company’s ability to operate robustly within the context of the African market.
Anant Badjatya, the Group CEO of Spiro, noted that this financial infusion will accelerate operations in Uganda and Rwanda, enhancing both the number of deployed electric motorcycles and the battery-swapping infrastructure. He stated that building network density and improving access will make electric mobility a more viable choice for users.
The investment aligns with AGG’s mandate of supporting projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Africa, focusing on clean transportation solutions. AGG, backed by multiple international funding commitments, aims to provide debt financing to ventures that combine climate impact with sustainable growth.
Spiro stands as a leader in Africa’s electric mobility landscape, operating the continent’s largest battery-swapping network for two-wheel vehicles. By replacing reliance on imported fossil fuels with sustainable transport solutions, Spiro has accomplished over 2.5 billion kilometers of low-carbon travel.
With its regional presence and assembly facilities in several African countries, Spiro is committed to producing electric vehicles tailored for the African market, furthering its impact on local economies.
Why It Matters
This renewed investment not only highlights the growing interest in sustainable transportation within Africa but also signals a commitment to reducing environmental impact through innovative mobility solutions. The expansion of electric mobility could play a crucial role in addressing transportation challenges and promoting economic development in the region.
