President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic visited William Paterson University in Wayne on September 25, coinciding with his participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. During this visit, he was awarded the President’s Medallion by University President Richard J. Helldobler, an honor that recognizes significant leadership and commitment to the Dominican community, including dual citizens residing abroad.
Recognition of Leadership and Commitment
President Helldobler expressed the university’s mission to cultivate productive graduates who actively contribute to their communities. He noted the significance of Abinader’s presence amid the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. William Paterson University, federally recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution, has a diverse student body, with approximately 32 percent identifying as Hispanic and a significant portion of Dominican heritage.
In his remarks, President Abinader highlighted the honor he received from the university as a mutual commitment to efficiency, honesty, and transparency in governance. He shared insights regarding the importance of education, referencing his family’s academic background and the growth in access to public education in the Dominican Republic under his administration. His government has focused on expanding technical education facilities across the nation and integrating academics into governmental roles, which he credits for many successes of his administration.
Abinader also reflected on the Dominican community in the United States, emphasizing the importance of contributing positively to society. He stated, “The best way to show the greatness of where you come from is to be the best citizen where you are right now,” addressing the Dominican representatives present, including government and industry leaders.
The ceremony at Hobart Manor was attended by several distinguished guests, including U.S. Representatives Nellie Pou and Analillia Mejia, New Jersey State Senator Benjie E. Wimberly, and Paterson Mayor André Sayegh, among others. Following the medallion presentation, President Abinader engaged with the Dominican community and university students, paying tribute to the late José Francisco Peña Gómez, a prominent Dominican political figure.
Abinader’s visit not only highlights the ties between the Dominican Republic and its diaspora in the United States but also underscores William Paterson University’s role in serving a diverse student population.
Why It Matters
The visit of President Abinader underscores the ongoing relationship between the Dominican Republic and its citizens abroad, emphasizing education’s vital role in fostering community engagement. By recognizing influential leaders within academia, the event reinforces the significance of cultural and educational exchanges that support both nations’ social development.
