The USA clinched the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Championship with a thrilling 5-4 walk-off victory against the Dominican Republic in extra innings on Saturday in Merida, Mexico.
Calvin Madenspacher’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Noah Osterman, securing the championship for the USA team. This win marks the nation’s third U-15 world title. The Dominican Republic, making its first appearance in the championship game, finished as silver medallists.
This final was tightly contested, with the Dominican Republic taking an early lead. Carlos Marrero singled to start the game and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Axel Heredia, giving the Dominicans a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.
The USA responded in the second inning. Tyler Early led off with a single, advancing on a groundout and benefiting from a couple of wild pitches to score the tying run. Shortly after, Mattias Di Maggio reached base, and a throwing error allowed him to come home, putting the USA ahead 2-1 in the third inning.
However, the Dominican Republic fought back, with Angel Montas hitting a pivotal 410-foot two-run home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
In a dramatic bottom of the seventh, the USA nearly sealed the win after loading the bases with two outs. Despite this opportunity, they were unable to capitalize, and the game advanced to extra innings.
Under the WBSC international tiebreak rule, the Dominican Republic had two players on base to start the eighth. An error during a bunt play allowed the Dominican Republic to score, taking the lead 4-3.
Trailing in the bottom of the eighth, the USA began their rally with Early on second base. A throwing error during a sacrifice bunt allowed Early to score the tying run, and the bases were loaded after a walk to Paris Head. With Osterman replacing Ju on third, Madenspacher hit the decisive sacrifice fly, allowing Osterman to score the winning run.
Manager Casey Scott expressed pride in the team’s resilience, praising the support from coaches and fans alike. Scott noted, “They share just as much success in this as we do.” Osterman described the moment as surreal, recounting his excitement upon realizing he was the winning run.
