Australian footballer Mary Fowler will miss the Matildas’ upcoming international matches against Germany and Haiti due to personal circumstances. The announcement was made by Football Australia on Tuesday morning, following discussions involving Fowler, her club Manchester City, and Matildas staff.
Fowler is coming off a strong performance with Manchester City, where she played a key role in a comeback victory over Arsenal in the Women’s Super League on Monday. No injury concerns were mentioned after that match.
Fowler’s absence is particularly notable as her partner, Nathan Cleary, an NRL player for the Penrith Panthers, is recovering from leg surgery in Sydney. Cleary underwent emergency surgery after suffering a compound fracture and dislocated ankle during a match against Newcastle.
In Fowler’s place, Charlton Athletic midfielder Leah Davidson has been called up to the Australian squad. Davidson has made four international appearances since her debut in 2024.
The Matildas are currently preparing for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup and will compete in two international friendlies in Europe. They recently faced Mexico in June, splitting the series with one win each. The matches against Germany and Haiti are set for Saturday morning and October 13, respectively.
