A birthday trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, took a dramatic turn for North Carolina resident Rhegan McKenzie, culminating in a fistfight, a night in jail, and being stranded after her friends left the trip early. McKenzie, who documented her experience on TikTok, originally planned to enjoy her birthday under sunny skies by the beach.
McKenzie traveled with her sister and a longtime friend, Abby, who brought along another friend named Sadie. Following travel delays, Abby and Sadie did not arrive at the resort until three hours after McKenzie and her group. McKenzie noted that tensions appeared to build between her friends, though she was unsure if this was the catalyst for the ensuing chaos.
On the day of her birthday, McKenzie and her group were at the swim-up bar when she sensed that Abby was acting strangely after some drinks. McKenzie claimed that Abby approached a stranger in an inappropriate manner, which led McKenzie to apologize for her behavior. Later that evening, the group faced a contentious moment when they received a $600 dinner bill, which they attempted to split among ten people. McKenzie suggested that Abby and Sadie each cover $25, but miscommunication escalated the situation.
Abby became upset and rejected McKenzie’s proposal, leading to an emotional confrontation. Despite McKenzie’s attempt to calm the situation by offering to pay with her card, Abby accused her of not understanding her financial struggles and left to cry in a corner.
As tensions rose, McKenzie’s sister confronted Abby about her behavior. Following this confrontation, Abby reportedly complained to her mother about feeling unsafe on the trip. McKenzie learned from her brother that Abby had said she could “drown and die” without concern, prompting McKenzie to confront Abby. After a heated exchange, McKenzie claimed that Abby struck her first, leading to a physical altercation that resulted in a pulled wig and shouts, with McKenzie ultimately asserting that Abby was now her enemy.
Security broke up the fight, but when Abby accused McKenzie of starting it, authorities intervened. McKenzie stated that while her family explained the situation, communication was complicated due to language barriers. McKenzie was taken into custody, allegedly for a statement, but claimed she was instead brought straight to jail. She was released earlier than expected, alongside Abby and Sadie, who chose to leave the trip soon after.
Though her birthday celebration was disrupted, McKenzie’s family rented a villa to continue their vacation. Reflecting on the experience, McKenzie expressed that while it was distressing at the time, they can now look back and laugh about the incident.
