Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft is working to overcome early-season struggles following his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) he sustained last season. Kraft scored his first touchdown of the season during the Packers’ 17-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but also faced challenges, including a missed catch in the end zone. Currently, he is averaging 9.9 yards per reception, significantly lower than his career average of 13.7 yards per catch.
Speaking about his performance, Kraft acknowledged that he might be trying too hard to make plays. “I think I’m just trying to do too much,” he said Wednesday. “Offensively, we might get into a lull, and I think I can make the game-saving play right there. I’m taking my eyes off the ball. Can’t do anything without the ball, so I’m just going to slow down and play my role. Catch the football.”
After four games this season, Kraft has recorded 15 receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown. By contrast, last season, he achieved 32 catches for 489 yards and six touchdowns in just eight games before his injury in a loss to the Carolina Panthers on November 2.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the issue, stating that players returning from significant injuries often need time to regain their form. “I think a lot of guys that come off major injuries, it takes a period of time,” LaFleur said. “The expectation is whatever you saw, that’s what it’s going to be. But it just takes them some time. They’ve got to get back to playing.”
Kraft had been preparing for the season prior to his injury and signed a four-year contract extension worth up to $92 million just before the season opener, where the Packers fell to the Minnesota Vikings, 39-22.
Despite his current challenges, Kraft remains optimistic about his development. He believes the game is beginning to slow down for him and he is gaining a better understanding of the defense. “Statistically, it might not look like I’m playing better,” Kraft said. “But I’m feeling more savvy in my coverage recognition.”
Kraft also contributed to the Packers’ offense in other ways, including taking a direct snap on a crucial fourth-and-1 situation against the Buccaneers, leading to a touchdown. “I was a quarterback in high school for two years, did a little under center,” he explained, underscoring his versatility on the field.
As Kraft strives to improve his performance, he emphasized the importance of continual growth. “The goal is always to ascend,” he said. “If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. So, my goal is to walk in this building every day with the right mindset.” The Packers are set to face the Chicago Bears in their upcoming matchup.
