A shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent occurred during an enforcement operation in the Bronx, New York City, on October 8. A 28-year-old man from the Dominican Republic sustained a non-life-threatening wound to his neck after the agent discharged his weapon, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The incident took place around 4 p.m. while ICE officers were attempting to arrest the man, who DHS officials said had ties to the Trinitarios gang and was wanted due to previous convictions for grand larceny and multiple arrests for crimes including assault and drug possession.
At the time of the shooting, a five-year-old child was present inside the man’s vehicle but was not harmed, as reported by law enforcement sources. Following the shooting, the injured suspect was transported to a hospital in a patrol vehicle.
Two federal agents were also injured during the encounter. One agent reportedly suffered injuries from a vehicle accident, though it remains unclear whether this incident was linked to the attempted arrest, officials stated. Both injured agents are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have commenced an investigation into the shooting, and the circumstances leading to the ICE agent firing his weapon are still being determined. A federal official indicated that the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) are involved in the inquiry.
Witnesses at the scene described seeing a man, who matched the description of the suspect, wearing a bright yellow construction vest and carrying a firearm before hearing several gunshots. Following the incident, crowds gathered, leading the New York Police Department (NYPD) to mobilize personnel to assist with traffic control and evidence collection. The NYPD confirmed that its officers were not involved in the shooting.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed strong criticism of the shooting and announced he had contacted the President regarding the incident. The Mayor has called for an end to ICE enforcement actions in the city, highlighting concerns for public safety in neighborhoods affected by such operations.
The investigation continues, with more information expected to emerge as authorities analyze the circumstances surrounding this incident.
