Construction delays have raised concerns about the anticipated opening of San Antonio’s first Pan-Asia Supermarket, a grocery store set to span more than 60,000 square feet. Although construction began over the summer at 3713 Colony Drive, reports on social media suggest the store may not be ready for its tentative spring 2027 opening.
During a visit to the construction site on October 8, most of the interior appeared empty, with construction crews primarily working on machinery and building materials. The store is located about a mile from the USAA headquarters.
Founded in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2010, Pan-Asia Supermarket offers a diverse range of Asian produce, seafood, and meats. Plans for the San Antonio location include a food court featuring freshly made bakery items, sushi, and a boba tea shop, in addition to standard grocery offerings of produce, candy, and household goods.
Some local residents have expressed concern regarding the construction timeline. One user on Reddit wondered whether the progress indicated potential delays in the planned opening: “They put the sign up…well, most of it. It’s missing an ‘A.’ For many weeks, it’s been just ‘Pan Asi.’ Did the project hit a snag?”
A spokesperson for Pan Asia Supermarket confirmed on September 30 that while no specific grand opening date could be provided, the goal remains to open before summer 2027. Earlier in August, the company acknowledged that construction had encountered delays.
The project involves a significant undertaking, including dismantling and remodeling three existing retail spaces to create the supermarket. According to state filings, work at the Colonies North Shopping Center is expected to continue until December 18, with total costs estimated at approximately $1.7 million.
The company’s decision to establish a location in San Antonio was driven by the city’s vibrant, diverse community and a growing demand for authentic international flavors. A company representative noted that the chosen site was intended to better serve residents with a large-scale and high-quality shopping experience that the area has previously lacked.
Currently, Pan-Asia Supermarket operates seven locations across the United States, with two more—including the San Antonio store—under development.
