Japan Defeats Haiti 5-1 in Friendly Match
On October 9, 2026, the Haitian women’s national soccer team, known as the Grenadières, faced a challenging opponent in Japan during a friendly match held at Stade Bauer in Saint-Ouen, France. The Grenadières, currently ranked 47th in the world, were decisively beaten 5-1 by the fifth-ranked Japanese team, known as the Samurai Blue.
Swedish coach Pia Sundhage implemented a 3-4-1-2 formation in an attempt to tackle the formidable Japanese squad. The starting lineup featured Kethna Louis, Claire Constant, and Johane Limage as defenders, supported by a midfield consisting of Roseline Éloissaint and Batcheba Louis on the wings, with Anyssa Ibrahim and Sherly Jeudy centrally positioned. Melchie Dumornay played as the attacking midfielder, behind forwards Brittany Raphino and captain Nérilia Mondésir. This formation often transitioned to a more defensive five-man setup to counteract Japan’s speed and attacking prowess.
Japan quickly established dominance in the match. Kiko Seike opened the scoring in the 26th minute, followed by Maika Hamano doubling the lead just seven minutes later. Yui Hasegawa extended the lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute. Before halftime, Haiti managed to score their only goal, as Batcheba Louis found the net in stoppage time, making it 3-1.
The second half saw Japan continue their offensive onslaught. Remina Chiba scored in the 57th minute, furthering Japan’s lead to 4-1, and Maya Hijikata capped off the match with Japan’s final goal in the 81st minute, concluding the game at 5-1.
Analysts criticized Sundhage’s formation, noting that the three-defender setup struggled against Japan’s skillful players. The Haitian team faced issues with cohesion and goalkeeping, particularly in the first half, when they conceded three goals in under 30 minutes. Despite having opportunities to score, such as clear chances from Dumornay and Mondésir, Haiti’s finishing ability fell short, pointing to structural weaknesses that need to be addressed as they prepare for the upcoming 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Grenadières are scheduled to play their next friendly match against Australia on October 13 at 9:00 PM at Stade Walter-Luzi in Chambly. Tickets are available at billetterie.fcchambly.com.
