The Saint Louis Science Center will unveil its latest exhibit, “Death by Natural Causes,” on March 20, 2027. This interactive showcase will explore the various ways nature can pose risks to human life.
According to the Science Center, the exhibit will feature a range of hazardous elements including poisonous plants, venomous animals, dangerous minerals, and even familiar foods. Among the plants highlighted are hemlock, belladonna, and strychnine, alongside a section on “Malevolent Minerals,” which educates visitors about elements like lead, showcasing their dual roles as useful and harmful substances.
Created by the Houston Museum of Natural Science in collaboration with Stage 9 Exhibits, St. Louis is set to be the inaugural stop on the exhibit’s new tour across the United States. “Death by Natural Causes” first debuted in Houston in 2018 and returned for a limited engagement in May 2026 before embarking on this tour.
Exhibit Details and Educational Themes
The exhibition also delves into the animal kingdom, focusing on species that possess venom or other defensive mechanisms. Fossil evidence will illustrate prehistoric encounters, showcasing human bones marked by attacks from animals like bears and jaguars.
Additionally, the exhibit addresses everyday dangers, educating visitors on the distinctions between poisonous, venomous, and toxic substances. Old wives’ tales and myths regarding natural dangers will also be featured, enhancing the educational experience.
The original iteration in Houston was well-received, prompting extensions into 2019 and a revival in 2026, indicating its popularity and educational value.
Tickets for “Death by Natural Causes” will be available starting January 8, 2027. While ticket prices have not yet been announced, the exhibit will be housed in Boeing Hall at the Saint Louis Science Center. Following its showing in St. Louis, the exhibit will continue on to various museums and science centers throughout North America over the following years.
